The last week in October Rotarians Marie Padavich, Wayne Mineo and Bob McClure and their spouses flew to Grand Bahama to visit our sister club, The Rotary Club of Freeport.
The relationship began last year at the President Elect Training Seminar when past Safety Harbor president, Jonathan Brewer, met Freeport President Queen Rolle. They decided to form a mutually
beneficial alliance which resulted in this visit.
At the luncheon meeting, both clubs did presentations describing their history, projects and aspirations.
The Safety Harbor Club was able to contribute $1400 dollars to the Freeport Club’s efforts to refurbish a Performing Arts Center for the primary benefit of the Grand Bahamas Youth Choir.
President Queen Rolle presided over the luncheon which included toasts to Queen Elizabeth II and President Barach Obama.
Assistant District Governor Mike Stafford took us on a tour of Freeport including the water project created by Rotary. It is a reverse osmosis process which can produce 7,000 gallons of water per hour. The club also has 6 trailers specifically designed to deliver 450 gallons of water to any neighborhood in need.
Queen and her fellow officers invited their Safety Harbor guests to a special dinner of local food at Zorba’s Restaurant in Lucayan Village.
President Elect Othyneil Pinder, Immediate Past President Louis Alleyne, and President Queen Rolle hope to travel to Safety Harbor this Rotary year.
The following day both clubs assisted Outreach Youth Ministry prepare and serve meals. The ministry had sold 1,000 meals which included chicken, ribs and fish with rice and other side dishes at $10 a piece. We cooked, assembled utensils and helped out as asked. Safety Harbor Rotarians are enthusiastic about “borrowing” the idea to benefit our charities.
