Peter Buczynsky, CEO of PharmaWorks, Inc. received the 2011 Richard L. McLaughlin Economic Development Volunteer of the Year award from the Florida Economic Development Council (FEDC) for the Tampa Bay Region.
Buczynsky was nominated for the award by the Pasco Economic Development Council (Pasco EDC) for his advocacy of economic development initiatives in Pasco County. He currently serves on the Pasco EDC Board of Directors, chairs the Pasco EDC Growth Committee, and is a founding member of Pasco EDC’s CEO Roundtable. He has spent a remarkable amount of time working with businesses, government and trade associations to gain support for local economic development initiatives.
Buczynsky has been instrumental in launching an initiative to drive a more robust workforce development strategy. He recently engaged Pasco EDC staff and the Pasco School District’s Community, Career and Technical Education Department to facilitate a deeper industry involvement in high school level Certified Career Academy programs and provide more hands on experiences for students in Pasco.
“I strongly believe that a technically educated employee base is the best for attracting manufacturing businesses to the state and Pasco County in particular. The business community must be an integral part in the educational process. I encourage businesses to open their doors to students – even for brief tours – and allow them to have the opportunity to see what goes on and provide real-world applications to what they are learning” says Buczynsky. “It’s all about giving them a spark that could lead to an exciting career path.”
“Workforce development is an integral part of Pasco EDC’s strategic plan for job creation and economic growth. While the fruits of our work with the Career Academies are in the early stages, we feel this initiative has great potential,” says John Hagen, CEO of the Pasco Economic Development Council. “With Peter’s assistance in engaging local businesses, we can successfully link the classroom curriculum to practical industry application.”
Buczynsky donates significant time supporting other key initiatives in the Tampa Bay area. In addition to his work with the Pasco EDC, he is a founding member of Career Technical Education Foundation (CTEF), serves on the Advisory Council for the Banner Center for Advanced Manufacturing, the advisory board at River Ridge High School, and is member of the Manufacturers’ Association of Florida.
Buczynsky’s company, Pharmaworks, Inc., has been recognized as an up and coming company to watch in Florida by both the Manufacturers’ Association of Florida and GrowFL. Pharmaworks was established in 2002 and continues to grow and develop in the Pharmaceutical Packaging Industry. The company employs 49 people and had a turnover of $10M last year. His company has been selected for assistance from Grow FL and the Pasco County Job Creation Incentive Program.
The FEDC Volunteer of the Year Award is named in honor of Richard L McLaughlin who firmly believed in the significance of volunteer contributions to the achievement of economic development goals for the state. In honor of his contributions, one outstanding volunteer is recognized annually in each of the eight FEDC Districts.
